Mach-E, Why is its right for me?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the most exciting offerings in the market. In this article, we will explore the ins and outs of Ford's first fully electric car, the Mustang Mach-E, and help you decide if it is the right fit for you. We will cover the vehicle's features, battery options, interior, driving experience, and practicality.

Ford Mustang Mach-E: Introduction

The Mustang Mach-E was first introduced in 2019 and went on sale in December 2020 as a 2021 model. Despite sharing the Mustang name and badges, the Mach-E is built on an all-new platform and is available with two battery options: a 75 kWh Standard Range and a 98 kWh Extended Range. Both options come with a single motor (rear-wheel drive) or a twin motor (all-wheel drive) layout.

The Mach-E boasts an impressive range of up to 372 miles, making it one of the longest-range electric cars available. It is important to note that the range is dependent on weather conditions, and you can lose up to 30% in the winter months. The entry-level car weighs just under two tonnes and has 265bhp. The most powerful version is the GT, capable of 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and 480bhp.

Ford has given the Mach-E unique Mustang-like styling, making it an exciting all-electric SUV.

What battery should I go for?

When it comes to battery options, Ford has made sure to give you the best chance of finding the right vehicle to suit your lifestyle. The Mustang Mach-E comes with a rear-mounted electric motor that drives the rear wheels. However, you can add a second motor up front for an all-wheel-drive option.

If you are considering the standard-range battery, you can choose between RWD or AWD. The RWD version offers 230 miles of range, 266 horsepower, and 317 lb-ft of torque. The AWD version has a range of 211 miles, 266 hp, and 428 lb-ft.

The extended-range battery offers more power and range. The RWD version has a range of up to 305 miles, 290 hp, and 317 lb-ft. The AWD version has a range of 270 miles, 346 hp, and 428 lb-ft.

Finally, the Mach-E GT comes with an AWD option that offers a range of 270 miles, 480 hp, and 600 lb-ft. The GT Performance version with AWD has a range of 260 miles, 480 hp, and 634 lb-ft.

When it comes to battery options, Ford has made sure to give you the best chance of finding the right vehicle to suit your lifestyle. The Mustang Mach-E comes with a rear-mounted electric motor that drives the rear wheels. However, you can add a second motor for an all-wheel-drive option.

What is the Mach-E's interior like?

Getting inside the Mach-E feels like a different experience. Instead of using a traditional door handle, you press a small circular button that pops the doors open. You can also set a passcode to get into your car, which is a neat feature. The Mach-E has ample head clearance, making it easy to climb in and out without any trouble.

The seats are comfortable and hug you, making you feel secure without feeling squashed. The interior looks and feels expensive, with a high caliber finish. Ford has stripped it back enough to feel new and exciting but has left enough familiar specs so it’s not confusing. The large SYNC4 screen is easy to get used to, and you will soon see why everyone loves the Mach-E.

How does it drive?

The Mustang Mach-E is an extremely fun SUV to drive. Even though this is a fully electric car, you can turn on the propulsion sound which will make you feel like you’re driving a sports car. If you go for the Mach-E GT AWD you will be doing 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. Even though this car has a lot of power, it also sticks to the road. Whether you get the AWD or RWD you will feel safe.

A lot of sports cars, especially SUV’s have a focus on looks and power. Ford has taken everything into consideration, look, feel, driving experience, and passenger experience so you know wherever you’re sitting you will be comfortable. The power delivery is smooth thanks to the electric system, and you can use one-pedal driving to come to a comfortable and complete stop simply by taking your foot off the accelerator. The steering and handling are fresh and responsive.

How practical is the Mach-E?

The Mach-E has a generous amount of storage space. You have the ability to lift the rear hatch to reveal 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. (Which is more than enough space for large suitcases, sports equipment, pushchairs, or anything that is tall) the reason is that the Mach-E has a tall roof inside which leaves you with a lot of room. Not only that but you are able to fold down the back seats completely to increase your boot capacity.

Ford has also added underfloor space in the cargo area, which is an excellent place for securing wet or dirty shoes, as an example. The same goes for the front trunk, or "frunk," which even has a drain plug inside and is fully watertight. This is handy if you want to go on a dog walk and rinse their muddy paws off, you can fill it with ice and have it as a cooler, you can wash it out if you’ve put something in that’s spilled, the options are endless.

How is Mach-E's technology?

Ford has upgraded their entertainment system! You are now greeted with a large 15.5-inch touchscreen that will immediately command your attention, it’s also powered by Ford's new SYNC4 operating system that is fast, sensitive, and reliable. Ford has always had dependable in-system navigation and maps, it has had an upgrade which means they’re better than ever! To access the maps its simple and to the point, and you can swipe, tap and pinch the screen to zoom in and out to get where you need to go. The Mach-E also has a new colourful digital cluster display in front of the driver that will show you your speed, how much battery you have left, your distance from objects, and so much more.

Ford has now made sure that you are able to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly on all models. This is great because you don't need to plug in your phone to access these apps—but you can if you want because there are four USB ports for charging inside.

The part that Ford has managed to perfect is their new driver aids, Every Mach-E includes:

  • Lane centering (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Blind-spot monitoring (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot)
  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Mach-E and the car in front even when the car in front is breaking)

If I decide on a Mach-E, which one should I buy?

If you’re looking to capture the classic Mustang feel, they have the Mach-E GT model. It has sportier seats, and tighter suspension that keeps a hot hatch feel, you will also get the GT badges rather than the classic horse.

For fun and practicality (not commuting miles to work every day) you could go for the standard-range RWD - it will still give you 230 miles of range and 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, so it's efficient and enjoyable. Ford has made a conscious effort to make sure that each person who buys a Mach-E will get the right Mach-E for them.
